Raquel Thomas (Patina Miller) is currently in a dilemma. In season 3 of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, she flirted with getting out of the game after being shot but couldn’t resist being pulled back in. At the same time, her relationship with her son, Kanan (MeKai Curtis), is the purest of struggles.
In season 4, that continues to be the case, with Raq and Kanan’s relationship hanging on by the tiniest of threads. This is thanks in large part to the two of them being in business together now that Ronnie (Grantham Coleman) is dead and no longer terrorizing Kanan or Southside.

Ahead of the season 4 premiere, CASSIUSLife’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls spoke with Patina Miller about Raq having to choose between her business and her relationship with her son.
Miller reveals that the choice isn’t easy, but she believes Raq will walk away with both her empire and her intact relationship with Kanan.
“Well, that’s a hard one. You already know what I’m going to say. I think we have watched Raq try to rebuild her relationship with Kanan for seasons two and three, ” Miller tells CASSIUSLife. “We have really watched her fight to keep her family together one through three seasons. So now, the consequences of her actions —and a lot of the characters’ actions— in season three leave them in a different place in season four. So I would say that at this point, she knows that there’s no going back with her son at all. But I do [think] both of them are very important to her, so I’m going to say that she would never choose between the two. She would just figure out how to make it work.”

One thing the Power franchise has always done is prop up its female characters, showing that they can, too, call their own shots in the male-dominated world of drug dealing.
Raising Kanan is a perfect example of that. Raq is the boss, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t males in the game who are constantly testing her and trying to take her off her throne. Still, she continues to find ways to ensure she comes out on top.
Being a woman in a man’s world in this way is always going to be a very tricky one…”
“It’s the same challenges she’s been facing for a number of years. There’s always someone out there trying to one-up her. Being a woman in a man’s world in this way is always going to be a very tricky one,” Miller begins. “She has to navigate a lot of different relationships. She has a lot of different things up in the air. The stakes are really high for her. So, Raq has been very successful in her business. She’s continued to make a lot of these people money. She’s been doing a lot of things, being the head, so you will watch her continue to do what she does best. Maybe she’s successful at it, or maybe there’ll be some issues. But there’s always an issue because once you’re at the top, you got to stay on top and someone’s always coming for your place. And so that’s really the vibe of this season.”
You can peep the entire interview above and watch Raq stay on top in Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 4, now streaming on the Starz app.
