The New York–based nonprofit arts organization Performa, which commissions and produces live performances, has announced that its new website, designed by the digital strategy and design studio Special Offer, will go live tonight at 6:30 p.m. EST. The platform will have a broadcast channel for new work, video from Performa’s archives, and curated screening programs.
The first program featured on the site, titled Musical Chairs, will explore the role of music in contemporary art. It will include selections from the Performa Biennial archives from 2005 to 2017. As part of the presentation, Mike Kelley’s The Judson Church Horse Dance (2009) and Laurie Simmons’s The Music of Regret (2005) will be streamed online for the first time. Footage of work by Sanford Biggers, Julie Mehretu, Shirin Neshat, Adam Pendleton, Genesis P-Orridge, and others will also figure in the inaugural broadcast.
Additionally, the nonprofit’s publication, Performa Magazine, will launch “Performa Reports,” a weekly review of performances in New York and elsewhere. The first pieces will cover Niv Acosta and Fannie Sosa at Performance Space, Grace Wales Bonner at the Serpentine Galleries in London, Kevin Beasley at Whitney Museum of American Art, M. Lamar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Klara Liden at Reena Spaulings, and Steve Paxton at the Museum of Modern Art.
Esa Nickle, the producing director of Performa, said in a statement, “Special Offer have embraced Performa’s role as a generator of ideas and producers of live artworks. They have created a space that will allow global audiences access to works from the Performa archives, alongside newly commissioned performance and live broadcast, from anywhere in the world.”
