Pamela Franks has been hired as director of the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Massachusetts, taking the place of Christina Olsen, who was tapped last summer to lead the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.
Franks has been at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven since 2004, currently holding the titles of senior deputy director and curator of modern and contemporary art. She also previously worked at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas and holds a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Texas at Austin.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Williams College Museum of Art and the strong tradition of excellence in the arts at Williams,” Franks, who will begin in her new position in mid-September, said in a statement. “WCMA is clearly a vital resource for the college and a longstanding model for academic museums.”
Among the shows currently on view at WCMA is “Sam Gilliam In Dialogue,” which presents a recently acquired drape painting by the artist. The work can be hung in a variety of ways, and is being presented in three different configurations, alongside different works by other artists, over the course of the exhibition’s run. The toothsome-sounding affair runs through September 3, and its third iteration goes on view June 7.
