P.P.O.W. gallery in New York now represents Belgian artist Sanam Khatibi, and will present a solo show of the artist’s work at its Chelsea home next October.
“We are thrilled and privileged to be representing Sanam Khatibi’s paintings,” Wendy Olsoff, cofounder of P.P.O.W., told ARTnews, adding that the gallery first saw the work through the artist’s Brussels dealer, Rodolphe Janssen, who also represents Betty Tompkins, another P.P.O.W. artist.
Khatibi is perhaps best known for her subtly colored paintings—often landscapes dotted with nude women interacting with animals—but also works in embroidery and sculptures, all inspired by Old Masters like Hieronymus Bosch and Lucas Cranach.
“Through her diverse influences Sanam brings a fresh vision to painting. She populates her worlds with all the contradictions of life from the personal to the political—from daily ordinary needs for survival to methods of warfare.” Olsoff adds. “P.P.O.W. has a long and recognized history of showing figurative painting and of showing women artists. We also show multi media work that has political and social content. Sanam’s work is a perfect fit.”
