New York-based artist Judith Linhares will join P.P.O.W.’s roster, which includes Martha Wilson, Betty Tompkins, Carolee Schneemann, Ramrio Gomez, and the estates of David Wojnarowicz and Martin Wong. Work by Linhares will be on offer at the gallery’s booth during Frieze New York next month.
Linhares’s paintings often depict groups of women, typically in the nude, going about sundry activities, from sweeping to roasting marshmallows to lounging. The fanciful scenes are typically rendered with large bands of paint in vibrant colors that meld Expressionism, Bay Area figuration, and elements of California assemblage. Her work was included in the controversial 1978 “Bad Painting” exhibition, curated by Marcia Tucker at the New Museum in New York.
