Nujoom Alghanem will return to the Venice Biennale this year, creating a site-specific video installation for the United Arab Emirates Pavilion. This year’s biennale opens on May 11 and runs through November 24.
It is the second time she has shown work at the pavilion—she also presented a piece there at the biennial’s 2017 edition, alongside works by Sara Al Haddad, Vikram Divecha, Lantian Xie, and Mohamed Yousif. Alghanem’s 2019 pavilion will be curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath.
The artist is best known in her home country for her poetry, though she is also a filmmaker. Among the films she has created is Sharp Tools, a documentary about the late artist Hassan Sharif, who staged a show in the Emirati pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2009.
In a statement, Bardaouil and Fellrath said of Alghanem, “Her evocative work is as profoundly concerned with expanding the formal components of her practice, mainly poetry and film, as it is with capturing the complexity of the human condition through telling remarkable stories about exceptional characters. We are confident that the site-specific commission with which she will be representing the UAE at the 2019 Venice Biennale will confront the international arts community with a truly unique, multidisciplinary artistic position.”
