From its verified Twitter account, the NRA shared a tweet with its almost 775,000 followers saying, “Big surprise: Kamala Harris is anti-gun. What she doesn’t seem to realize is that most of her gun control policies either wouldn’t work, or are already law, or basically make no sense.”
The tweet included an NRA article published Friday titled, “Kamala Harris and Her Perplexing Anti-Gun Ideas,” that accused Harris of trying to satisfy “anti-gun extremists” who hope to lead democrats “down the path of eviscerating the Second Amendment.”
In response, the Democratic presidential hopeful’s campaign sent a fundraising email laying out the attack and asking supporters to help the campaign, “reach our emergency fundraising goals today to ensure we have the resources to respond.”
Specifically, they asked for 997 more donations before midnight.
“For the gun lobby, there is no more important mission than defeating any politician that has the courage to stand up to them and present real solutions to the gun violence epidemic,” the email read.
“We can’t let these attacks on Kamala and our campaign go unanswered, which is why your contribution of any amount is so important today.”
This comes a day after Harris was one of 16 Democratic candidates to participate in a last minute gun reform presidential forum in Des Moines, Iowa, — organized by activist group Everytown for Gun Safety after last weekend’s mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that left at least 31 people dead.
Harris debuted a new line while on stage Saturday, linking President Donald Trump to the mass shooting in El Paso.
“People say to me that Donald Trump caused those folks to be killed,” she said. “Well, no, of course he didn’t pull the trigger, but he’s certainly been tweeting out the ammunition.”
In late April at a town hall with CNN, Harris rolled out her intentions and the topic has since become a mainstay during her stump speech on the campaign trail, recalling stories from school-age children of having to do active shooter drills in class.
At the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Saturday, Harris’ sister Maya guided a small boy named Jack to the senator who told her about the first time he had a drill in 1st grade.
Harris told him, “I’m glad to meet you. We’ll work together on this,” and then introduced Jack to her state campaign chairwoman Deidre DeJear to save his information.
A typical stump line, she said, “supposed leaders in Washington, DC, “have failed to have the courage to reject a false choice which suggests you’re either in favor of the second amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away,” at a back-to-school event last week in Henderson, Nevada.
The NRA also criticized Harris for attacking the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, a 2005 law that shields the gun industry from liability when third parties use weapons for criminal purposes.
In her proposed policy, Harris would revoke the licenses of gun manufacturers and dealers who break the law and, for the most egregious, make them criminally liable.
At the Saturday gun safety reform event in Des Moines, Harris again called for its repeal.
“I’ve been an advocate of that for a long time because there needs to be an opportunity for people to have a day in court to litigate these issues and court will decide,” she said. “But to have this shield against responsibility is not in best interest of justice.”
