Curator and critic Niels Van Tomme will leave his post as director of the de Appel museum in Amsterdam on November 30 to head up the Brussels-based Argos Centre for Art and Media, which specializes in contemporary audiovisual arts. Van Tomme was appointed director of the de Appel in August 2016 after its prior director, Lorenzo Benedetti, was fired by the museum’s board, which cited “problems” with his leadership.
According to a release, de Appel is in “good shape” at its new location in the city’s Nieuw-West borough, and its visitor numbers are increasing. “[Van Tomme’s] appointment followed a tumultuous time for the organization and his arrival brought tranquility and stability, but also renewal in terms of housing, the Curatorial Program, the organization’s artistic direction, and renewed critical focus on education,” the press release states.
Maaike Lauwaert, head of internal affairs at de Appel, will serve as acting director beginning December 1.
Van Tomme has previously curated exhibitions and programs at the Kitchen in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and other institutions. He is an editor of several books, including Where Do We Migrate To? (2011) and Aesthetic Justice: Intersecting Artistic and Moral Perspectives (2015).
