Art dealer Sean Horton, who has run spaces under a variety of names in New York and Berlin, will open a gallery in Dallas in September called Sean Horton (presents).
“As a native Texan from the area, I feel that this opportunity represents a homecoming to a city where, in my early twenties, I first discovered contemporary art,” Horton said in a release. The new venture will be located in a storefront in a Mission Revival building in the Oak Cliff neighborhood, and will present both established and emerging artists.
Horton was among the first dealers to open on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, when he set up shop in 2006 on the northern tip of Eldridge Street under the name Sunday L.E.S. In 2009, he opened a Chelsea location as Horton Gallery. In 2010 set up in Berlin in a space that ran until 2012.
Over the years Horton has hosted one-person shows with a number of superb painters, including Keltie Ferris, Leidy Churchman, Jacques Louis Vidal, Lauren Luloff, Wallace Whitney, and more.
In 2014, Horton merged his enterprise with Chelsea outfit ZieherSmith, an arrangement that continued until the middle of 2016, after which he opened a gallery called Horton near Madison Square Park in the tiny neighborhood known as Rose Hill (not to be confused with the Fordham campus of the name in the Bronx).
The final show at the Rose Hill spot was a solo outing by Kate Groobey that ended in October of last year. Horton said he will continue to maintain an office in New York for art advising and private sales.
