The Burning in Water gallery in New York will open a new location in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood in the Minnesota Street Project, the exhibition complex that is home to a number of spaces, including Jack Fischer Gallery and Anglim Gilbert Gallery. It will be led by Anna Hygelund.
The new gallery’s first show will be a one-person outing by Valerie Hegarty titled “American Berserk.” Opening Tuesday, April 24, it will include ceramic watermelon sculptures Hegarty has been making that are are imbued with macabre references to the 17th-century vanitas motif, wherein decaying fruits and vegetables reflect human mortality. The artist has said that watermelons are the most “bodily” of fruits.
The gallery’s roster also includes Borinquen Gallo, Jesse Krimes, and Eric Lopresti.
