The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has given the New Museum in New York a $660,000 grant in support of its New Inc initiative, which helps artists, engineers, and production companies realize technologically minded projects. The grant will fund the incubator for the next two years. This is now the second year in a row that the Knight Foundation has donated a large sum to New Inc—in 2017, it put $250,000 toward the program.
Victoria Rogers, the Knight Foundation’s vice president for the arts, said in a statement, “To increase audience interest and engagement in the digital age, museums need access to products and services that help to make technology part of their culture. The New Inc program offers the space, resources, and community for entrepreneurs to experiment with and develop the kind of innovation that changes mindsets and systems.”
Additionally, the New Museum announced a second batch of participants in New Inc. Among them are Dot Dot, which will explore the role virtual reality can play in museums; Abstract Nomadic Media, which will develop augmented reality software that can be used while viewing video art; and the coalition Movers and Shakers, which will investigate how AR, VR, and other technologies can be used to reach marginalized communities.
