In 2008, to mark the 20th anniversary of Great Britain’s Second Summer of Love, the Guardian quoted DJ Peter Tong on the spirit of the time. “It was all one love, everyone together,” he told the paper. “Anyone can dance all of a sudden, freedom of expression. Dress down, not up. Converse trainers, smiley T-shirts—a sort of tribalism took over. Everyone was happy to be the same.” Today, in a new collaboration with Gucci, Frieze is premiering a film series that celebrates the 30th anniversary of the acid house wave in 1988–89, a period of rave parties fueled by the potent combination of ecstasy and house music.
The four-part series is the first project from Frieze’s brand new creative production house, Frieze Studios, which has commissioned artists Jeremy Deller, Arthur Jafa, and Wu Tsang, and emerging filmmaker Josh Blaaberg to create films that speak to the Summer of Love’s enduring effect on culture.
“Frieze and Gucci share a desire to support and project the voices of artists,” Frieze co-founder Amanda Sharp said in a statement. “By collaborating with artists on these films it’s exciting for the art world to expand its audience.”
The first film to be completed, Wu Tsang’s INTO A SPACE OF LOVE, is set to premiere today at 5 p.m. at Frieze New York’s “Talks Space” in Randall’s Island Park, followed by a discussion with the artist and cast members. Enjoy a preview below.
