The Artists’ Legacy Foundation in Oakland, California, has named Nancy Chunn the recipient of its 2018 Artist Award, which has an unrestricted purse of $25,000. The Artist Award is given annually to a painter or sculptor for whom “evidence of the hand is a significant factor in making art.”
Chunn, a New York-based painter who is also a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts, said in a statement that she “gets ideas through words.” As a self-described “political junkie,” she often satirizes politics and current events in paintings imbued with wry humor. She is perhaps best known for a year-long project wherein she added text and imagery to front pages of The New York Times printed between January 1 and December 31, 1996.
This year’s award panel included Elizabeth Armstrong, the executive director of the Palm Springs Art Museum in California; Hung Liu, a painter and educator; and Stephen Westfall, a painter, critic, and contributing editor at Art in America.
Armstrong said in a statement, “The Artist Award could have been designed for Nancy Chunn. Mixing caustic humor, political wit, and an unwavering commitment to truth-speaking through art, she has created an oeuvre of history painting relevant to our times.”
