It is no secret longtime Maryland Senate President Mike Miller has struggled with health issues over the last few years; specifically he suffers stage four prostate cancer among other ailments. On Oct. 24, Miller, perhaps the most powerful man in state politics was expected to announce his plans for the future during a meeting of Democratic state senators in Annapolis. Although it is uncertain, the speculation is that Miller, who is currently the longest serving state senate president in the United States will announce he is stepping down.
The possibility of his exit has sparked a flurry of activity, much of it covert as Senate members jostle for the opportunity to occupy Miller’s chair. Two senators that have emerged as perhaps the most likely to ascend to the senate presidency if Miller retires are Sen. Bill Ferguson of Baltimore and Sen. Doug Peters of Prince George’s County. The AFRO reached out to both Ferguson and Peters for comment and neither returned our calls.
If Miller’s departure is indeed imminent it could signal a major shift in the trajectory of Maryland politics for decades to come.
