Derrick Jones, better known as rapper-turned-celebrity DJ “D-Nice,” has taken his turntable skills online while millions of people are remaining indoors in wake of the coronavirus lockdown. Now, the popular DJ is using his digital parties to encourage people to register to vote.
Over the weekend, Jones played music for hours on his Instagram account in an event he called “Homeschool at Club Quarantine,” drawing over 160,000 people, including A-list celebrities like Will Smith, Sean Combs, and Mark Zuckerberg. He plans to host another digital dance party Wednesday evening with former first lady Michelle Obama. The popular DJ announced via Twitter that he is partnering with Obama for an online voter registration drive.

In this tough time, music can comfort us and bring us together. That’s why I can’t wait for the @WhenWeAllVote #CouchParty with a featured live set from @djdnice! He’ll keep our volunteers motivated with some tunes as they help register voters.

The party will be called “Couch Party: A Voter Registration Live Set” and is an online collaboration with When We All Vote, Mrs. Obama‘s voter registration initiative. The event will take place on Instagram Wednesday, March 25 starting at 6:30 p.m. ET.
“As our reality continues to change in the wake of the coronavirus’ ongoing impact on individuals and our community, it’s important that we check on our people and look out for one another. So we are coming together, virtually, to reach potential voters where they are….at home! YOU are invited to our first official #CouchParty to help register voters.
We are calling on your roommates, your family, your virtual happy hour clique, your sweet babies and even pets to join our #CouchParty next Wednesday, March 25, starting at 6 pm ET. From a safe distance, we can still make an impact together to ensure that people are registered and ready to vote!
First, join us for a kick-off call at 6:00 pm ET via Facebook! Don’t have Facebook? No problem, join us via Zoom!
We’ll do a quick run-through of how to get you set-up on our texting platform. Then, help us reach 50,000+ voters by texting until 9:00 pm ET. We’ll keep you updated throughout the evening on our progress. And tune in to our Facebook Live at 6:30 pm ET, where rapper and producer DJ D-Nice will play a live set as a thank you while you text away!”
