Michael E. Smith Is Now Represented by Stuart Shave Modern Art -ARTnews

London’s Stuart Shave Modern Art gallery now represents the Providence, Rhode Island–based sculptor Michael E. Smith in the United Kingdom. In the United States, the artist will continue to be represented by Andrew Kreps Gallery, which announced in November that it will leave New York’s Chelsea neighborhood for Tribeca. Smith will have his first solo show at Stuart Shave’s Vyner Street gallery in London this October.

Smith’s sculptures are often formed from found or appropriated household items that are then juxtaposed with unnatural-seeming materials, such as taxidermy and hornet nests. These works have been shown at MoMA PS1 and ScupltureCenter in New York and, most recently, at the MSU Broad museum in East Lansing, Michigan.

“I am delighted that Michael E. Smith has chosen to be represented by Modern Art in the U.K.,” Stuart Shave told ARTnews. “I consider the objects he makes as a form of displaced Americana, one that subverts the cultural heritage of the current climate of fear, and distilled into these completely potent, economic, and ghost-like sculptures.”
