Kweisi Mfume, the person who preceded the late Rep. Elijah Cummings representing the 7th Congressional District of Baltimore, is poised to make a major announcement about his future and the seat he once held. He is scheduled to make the announcement Nov. 4, at noon.
Mfume, who was the second man after the legendary Parren J. Mitchell, to represent the venerable 7th, served in Congress from 1987 to 1996, when he accepted the position of president of the NAACP. Cummings ascended to the 7th District seat replacing Mfume in 1996, after a hard fought seven candidate Democratic primary victory. He had previously served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1983 to 1996.
Mfume is one of several high-profile names that have been mentioned as possible candidates to succeed Cummings — one of the most consequential members of Congress of his generation — including Cummings’ widow Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, State Sen. Jill P. Carter and Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby.
