Reto Thüring, who currently works as chair of modern, contemporary, and decorative art at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, will be the chair of contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston starting September 10. In his new role, Thüring will oversee programming—including special exhibitions and gallery installations throughout the building—from the contemporary art department, which was established in 1971 and comprises over 1,500 works of various mediums.
“I cannot think of a more compelling framework to consider the role of contemporary art than the MFA—one of the great encyclopedic museums with a fascinating and rich collection,” Thüring said in a statement. “This institution is poised to play an important role in addressing the cultural, political and social complexities of our time. I strongly believe contemporary art provides a necessary lens through which to look at these issues, across time and on a global scale.”
At CMA, Thüring was responsible for managing the contemporary collection and new exhibitions at the museum and the Transformer Station, a contemporary art venue owned by the Bidwell Foundation in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. He has worked on solo shows of Kara Walker, Julia Wachtel, Fred Wilson, and Damián Ortega, among others.
