Artist Alicja Kwade has been selected to do this year’s Roof Garden Commission for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her new work, a site-specific installation titled ParaPivot, will go on view at the museum on April 16.
Kwade, who is based in Berlin, is known for her spare installations that, through uses of mirrors and industrial materials, aim to reflect, at times literally, on how we perceive space. Though her work has appeared at a variety of international venues, including the 2017 Venice Biennale, the Met outing will be Kwade’s first U.S. solo museum show.
In a statement, Max Hollein, the Met’s director, said, “The Met’s Roof Garden Commission is a catalyst for bold artistic intervention and the continuous rethinking of a unique space, and it’s with great anticipation that we look forward to unveiling Alicja Kwade’s project this spring. The setting—perched atop the Museum’s vast collection and set against New York City’s iconic skyline and Central Park—presents a compelling site for Kwade, whose works offer an expansive view of the history of art and science.”
