Three members of gospel quartet, The Nelons, are dead after a plane crash. The plane going down near Gillette, Wyoming on Friday.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a Pilatus PC-12/47E impacted terrain at around 1:04 p.m. MDT on July 26. The reason why the plane crashed is still being investigated, but the NTSB said there was an autopilot issue.
“It is very early in the investigation and not much information [is] available at this time,” NTSB Media Relations Specialist Keith Holloway told USA TODAY. “What I can provide is the NTSB team is expected to be on scene today [July 27].”
During the NTSB investigation, investigators will evaluate the pilot, aircraft and the operating environment.
“The aircraft is in a remote location and once they gain access, they will begin documenting the scene, examining the aircraft,” Holloway said. “The aircraft will then be recovered and taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.”

The group members killed in the crash include Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, Amber and Nathan Kistler and their assistant Melodi Hodges. The pilot, Larry Haynie and his wife Melissa, were also killed in the crash.
According to a statement from Gaither Music Management Group, the quartet were on their way to Gaither Homecoming Cruise in Alaska.
“As many of you have heard by now, my father and mother, Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, along with my sister, Amber and brother-in-law, Nathan, as well as our dear friends Melodi Hodges, Larry and Melissa Haynie were involved in a tragic plane crash on Friday,” Autumn Nelon Streetman, the daughter of Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, said in a statement. “Thank you for the prayers that have been extended already to me, my husband, Jamie, and our soon-to-be-born baby boy, as well as Jason’s parents, Dan and Linda Clark. We appreciate your continued prayers, love and support as we navigate the coming days.”
The Nelons recorded more than 35 albums and had more than 20 Top 5 Southern Gospel radio singles including “Thanks,” “Come Morning,” and “We Shall Wear a Robe and Crown.” The group was also nominated for a Grammy in 1991 and they received 35 GMA Dove Award nominations. They won a Dove Award in 2021 and were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
“The GMA and our entire music community is grieving over the tragic loss of Jason, Kelly and Amber as well as the others involved in the tragic plane crash,” GMA President Jackie Patillo said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with Autumn and the rest of the Nelon family. They will be forever cherished and remembered in the GMA Hall of Fame.”
