New York’s Kasmin gallery now represents painter Matvey Levenstein, who currently has a self-titled exhibition on view at the gallery through March 2.

Levenstein, who was born in Moscow and currently works out of New York and Orient, on Long Island, makes subtly colored works in traditional modes—landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and the like—that seem to come intriguingly out of another era.

These works nod to Romantic 19th-century figures and the history of black-and-white films, while still having a unplaceable quality.

An M.F.A. grad from Yale, Levenstein has also has solo shots at Galleria Lorcan O’Neill in Rome and Larissa Goldston Gallery and Jack Tilton Gallery in New York, among other places. He is also a professor at New York’s School of Visual Arts.
