The Los Angeles art world is adding a gallery.
Matthew Brown, an independent curator who’s formerly worked at Los Angeles galleries such as Gagosian, Hannah Hoffman, and Moran Moran, is opening his own eponymous enterprise in Hollywood, nearby Regen Projects and Jeffrey Deitch.
Matthew Brown Los Angeles—the full name for the gallery—opens January 26 with a solo show of work by LA-based artist Kenturah Davis titled “Blur In The Interest of Precision.” It will run through March 3.
Brandy Carstens, a former associate director at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York, has headed to the West Coast to be the new business’s director. “Following the wonderful experiences I had over the last 12 years in New York, this new role felt like a natural move,” Carstens said in a phone interview. “I look forward to visiting the East Coast often, and to collaborating with my colleagues there. We’re putting together a spring group show that presents many voices from New York and Los Angeles, which will be a fun introduction.”
The gallery has not yet released a full artist list, but solo shows by artists Tomm El-Saieh and Vincent Valdez are on the calendar for the coming months. “It just came out of me having relationships with what I thought were some incredible artists that weren’t showing in L.A.,” Matthew Brown told ARTnews while discussing his program. “I always wanted to open a gallery, and there was a sense of urgency because I knew it was such a great opportunity to open this gallery with these specific artists.”
