The Jeu de Paume in Paris has announced that Marta Gili will resign as its director—a position she has held for the past 12 years. Her last day at the museum will be October 16, which is when the Jeu de Paume is slated to open Ana Mendieta, Dorothea Lange, and Alejandro Cesarco shows.
Gili joined the Jeu de Paume as director in 2006. Since then, she has helped the museum organize more than 180 exhibitions, including important retrospectives and surveys for such artists as Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, and Lorna Simpson. Prior to working at the Jeu de Paume, she was active primarily in the Spanish art world, serving as the head of La Caixa Foundation’s photography and visual arts department in Barcelona from 1991 to 2005.
According to a news release from the institution, Gili will now return to Spain, to work on “a large number of contemporary art projects” in Barcelona and other cities. Asked for details about those projects, the museum said it could not yet share them.
