Big news late on this Friday evening: artist Marko Peljhan has been picked by the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana to represent his native Slovenia at the 58th Venice Biennale, according to the state-owned Slovenian Press Agency. The event will run May 11 through November 24, 2019.
In 1992, Peljhan founded the Projekt Atol Institute, a nonprofit that is involved in scientific research and collaboration, which are all elements of the artist’s practice. In 1999, he inaugurated the Projekt Atol Flight Operations, which aims to “support art and cultural activities in the atmosphere, in orbit, and beyond,” according to Culture.si.
Among Peljhan’s best-known pieces is Makrolab, which he has described as “an autonomous communications, research, and living unit and space, capable of sustaining concentrated work of 4 people in isolation/insulation conditions for up to 120 days.” It appeared at Documenta 10 in Kassel, Germany, in 1997.
Peljhan has put in a long string of appearances at such international art festivals. His CV includes the 2014 Montreal Biennial, the 2009 Istanbul Biennial, the 2008 Brussels Biennial, the 2003 Venice Biennale, the 2002 Gwangju Biennale, and Manifesta 2, in 1998.
Other recent artist representing Slovenia in Venice include Nika Autor (in 2017), JAŠA (2015), and Jasmina Cibic (2013).
