The angelic face of 3-year-old McKenzie Elliot was posted throughout many East Baltimore neighborhoods after she was shot in the head while she sat on the front porch of her home in August 2014. Her killing rattled communities throughout the city.
Five years later, an alleged member of the Old York Money Gang (OYMG) has been sentenced to 25 years in jail in McKenzie’s death.
According to a report in the Baltimore Sun, Terrell “Rell” Plummer pleaded guilty last November, to one count of racketeering conspiracy, and admitted to dealing heroin, cocaine and marijuana as a member of the OYMG between 2013 and 2017. As a part of that plea deal he also admitted to firing the errant shot allegedly meant for rival gang members, which killed McKenzie in August 2014.
According to federal prosecutors the OYMG terrorized the Waverly community and intimidated witnesses to their crimes from coming forward, including McKenzie’s death. Her mother, Nina Epps and McKenzie’s sister Nafessa Harrison both spoke at the sentencing hearing for Plummer, and said they were scared to testify, according to the Sun.
“We live in the city of Baltimore,” Epps said. “Let’s be real.”
McKenzie’s death disturbed many in the city, perhaps more so than the hundreds of other homicides that have plagued this city each year since her death. The killing compelled city leaders to designate “McKenzie Elliott Way” in the Waverly community in 2015.
