Her roster of clients includes Angela Simmons, Kenya Moore, Da Brat, and other celebrities. She is Mimi Johnson—a makeup artist—also known as ‘Mimi J.,’ Johnson recently launched a beauty subscription box, Grind Pretty. The subscription box is an extension of the Grind Pretty brand, an online platform designed to connect aspiring female entrepreneurs and experts in the beauty and lifestyle space.
The Atlanta-based makeup artist’s subscription box highlights products from women-owned brands and provides expert tips and advice from industry professionals.
“I started this quarterly box as another way to promote amazing female entrepreneurs and get their products out to a demographic of other women who would love to try them out and support,” said Johnson in a recent online post.

The first box includes deluxe samples of Skinglass by Noorface, The Glamatory Universal LipDrip, Jones & Rose Island Girl Body Souffle, Curluxe Naturals Jojoba Mint Cleansing Tea Shampoo, along with other samples and lifestyle items.
Johnson is no stranger to the limelight but it didn’t come easy. After having her son and leaving an IT position, she knew she had to make some drastic changes to give her child the life that she knew he deserved. “I had a son. He’s my world but that changed things for me. I couldn’t move how I had previously been moving. I had to have a real conversation with myself about what I was going to do because the answer wasn’t to quit,” Johnson told Essence. “I started to think about what can create wealth for my future, so [I] and my son can stay stable. That’s how the Glamatory came about.”
Her work can be seen on Bravo, VH1, Oxygen, WeTV, Aspire, and Lifetime. Additionally, Johnson has a partnership with Simmons that consists of a successful brand collaboration called LipART. In addition to the subscription service, Johnson also owns The Glamatory—a beauty boutique located in Smyrna, Georgia.
