The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has appointed Naima J. Keith, the current deputy director and chief curator of L.A.’s California African American Museum, as its new vice president of education and public programs. The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the news on Thursday evening, said her last day at CAAM would be March 8.
Keith started work at CAAM in 2016 and has organized exhibitions devoted to artists including Shinique Smith and Genevieve Gaignard. She also helped bring the Brooklyn Museum show “We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-85” to the museum. She is now working with Diana Nawi on the fifth edition of the Prospect New Orleans triennial, which is set to open in fall 2020.
Previously, she worked as an associate curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, where she oversaw critically acclaimed shows including a 2014 Charles Gaines survey. She has also been a curatorial fellow at the Hammer Museum in L.A. In 2017 Keith won the High Museum of Art’s David C. Driskell Prize for contributions to black art history.
In a statement given to the Los Angeles Times, Michael Govan, the director of LACMA, said that Keith “brings a wealth of experience in engaging a broad range of audiences from her curatorial and educational projects and initiatives.”
