Veteran college museum leader Stephanie Wiles, who currently heads the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has been tapped to be the director of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Wiles will take the place of Jock Reynolds, who announced last year that he would step down when his term ends on June 30, 2018, after two decades in the position. Wiles starts on July 1.
“I am thrilled about this incomparable opportunity to lead the Yale University Art Gallery,” Wiles said in a statement. “Its renowned collections and distinguished staff make the gallery one of the finest university art museums in the world.” As a press release notes, the Yale University Art Gallery is also the oldest college art museum in the United States, and rich with treasures.
Before joining Cornell, Wiles was director of the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in Ohio, and prior to that held roles at the Davison Art Center at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and the Morgan Library and Museum in New York. She’s an expert in the Old Masters and a board member of the Association of Art Museum Directors.
