“It has come to my attention that there are some folks who struggle, or pretend to struggle, with the proper pronunciation of our future president’s name,” Washington stated her tone a mix of playful admonition and earnestness.
“Confusion is understandable. Disrespect is not, so tonight, we are going to help everyone get it right.”
To really drive the point home, Kerry brought out two special guests who know Vice President Harris better than almost anyone: her grandnieces, Amara, 8, and Leela Ajagu. These two little stars walked out with confidence, ready to teach the crowd a thing or two.
“Hello, everybody. My name’s Amara,” the older sister introduced herself with a smile.
“And my name is Leela, her little sister,” added Leela, 6, equally adorable.
Then, in the cutest tutorial ever, they broke down the pronunciation of ‘Kamala’ for the audience. “Just start with ‘comma’ and end with ‘la, la, la,’” shared the trio. The crowd loved it, laughing and cheering as the trio turned a serious point into a memorable and heartwarming moment.
The trio’s segment was more than just a playful interlude; it carried deep cultural significance. In a time when names, particularly those of people of color, are often mispronounced or dismissed, this moment underscored the importance of acknowledging and respecting the identities of leaders like Vice President Harris.
