Katt Williams‘ legendary interview with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay started the year off with a bang, and the comedian is ending the year on the same note.
On a recent episode of the Good One podcast, hosted by Vulture’s Senior Editor, Jesse David Fox, Williams made the hilarious claim that he’s responsible for one of the most prolific basketball players of all time, future Hall of Famer Steph Curry.
“Anybody that knows me knows that I don’t claim the sh-t I do,” Williams explained. “But I am responsible for the greatest shooter in the NBA, without question.”
The topic arose after Fox asked him about a previous quote in which Williams says he was the first to encourage Curry to shoot the ball from deep.
From there, Williams launches into a story about knowing Curry before becoming a famous NBA player. He paid Curry $5,000 to play in a celebrity basketball game for the Los Angeles Children & Family Services, which he organizes annually.
“[Curry] comes out, nobody knows who he is. People miss-say his name, don’t nobody know who he is, nobody cheers when we say his name,” Williams remembers. “But this dude comes, and as soon as he passes that half line, he can shoot anywhere from there to the three-point line.”
He claims Curry scored about 40 points in the first game, and the following year, he scored 50 points, which led to Williams giving him words of encouragement because if he goes to the NBA, they’ll either have to adjust the rules or he’ll be the best shooter ever. Plus, he’s not as burnt out as other players because he’s not running as much, and he pulls up from so deep.
“If you can shoot before people can start defense, you’ll be the greatest shooter that ever lived,” Williams told Curry. “Now, I’m not saying he took that advice and went on to do that, but he took my advice and went on to do that, so …”
