The Joyce Foundation in Chicago has revealed the 2019 winners of its Joyce Awards, which are given to collaborations between artists of color and arts institutions based in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Each award comes with $50,000, and is intended to support the creation and commissioning of new work.
Tracie Hall, the director of the Joyce Foundation’s Culture Program, said in a statement, “What stands out about this cohort of Joyce Award winners is that they are directly taking on the biggest challenges facing their communities. These artists are asking questions like ‘how does a community come together to create its own strategy to address economic disinvestment?’ and ‘how can communities use art to chronicle and ultimately subvert histories of segregation?’ ”
The list of 2019 Joyce Awards winners follows below.
- TRUE Skool in Milwaukee with musicians Ana “Rokafella” Garcia, Cita Sadeli (CHELOVE), and Aja Black
