On the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Great Hall, Julia Bullock will play a reimagined Joséphine Baker in a dark and “intimate consideration of the life and legacy of the famous singer, activist, and cultural icon.”
The performance, titled Perle Noire, or “black pearl,” was conceived by Peter Sellars and features Bullock as soprano alongside the new music collective International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), with composer Tyshawn Sorey on percussion and piano. Directed by Zack Winokur and choreographed by Michael Schumacher, the work will also feature text by poet Claudia Rankine.
