Facebook won’t be hitting the “like” button on John Oliver’s latest segment.
The “Last Week Tonight” host launched a new attack on the social media network on Sunday night, slamming it as “a fetid swap of mistruths and outright lies interspersed with the occasional reminder of a dead pet.” But more significantly, Oliver took an in-depth look at how those “mistruths and outright lies” can harm and even destabilize entire nations.
Malicious Facebook posts, he said, escalated tensions in Myanmar, where the military has been accused of deadly attacks on Rohingya refugees.
“Facebook has been a useful instrument for those seeking to spread hate,” Oliver said, citing a U.N. report on tensions in the nation.
Another critic called Facebook a toilet, an accusation Oliver refuted… sort of:
“Calling Facebook a toilet is a little unfair to toilets because they make shit go away whereas Facebook retains shit, disseminates shit to your acquaintances and reminds you of shit from seven years ago all while allowing corporations to put their shit in front of you. What I’m saying is, there’s a purity and integrity to toilets that Facebook seriously lacks.”
Then Oliver offered a mocking new advertisement for Facebook that likely won’t be “shared” by the company any time soon.
Check it out in the clip above.
