Criticism never sleeps!
Hot on the heels of winning a Pulitzer Prize last year, critic Jerry Saltz has garnered another accolade. On Thursday night, the American Society of Magazine Editors named the New York magazine vet’s 2018 article “How to Be an Artist” the winner in the Leisure Interests category of its annual National Magazine Awards.
The citation for the prize said that Saltz “provided 33 thoughtful, wise, and reassuring lessons that made artistic challenges feel like child’s play. After reading ‘How to Be an Artist,’ it would seem almost impossible not to be successful in your own creative work.” The official announcement came at an awards ceremony at Brooklyn Steel.
The ASME awards, which come with a handsome copper trophy based on an Alexander Calder sculpture, are technically presented to the magazine publishing the winning article; this is New York’s 41st win with Adam Moss at the helm. Earlier this year, Moss announced he’d step down after 15 years as editor-in-chief.
Thursday’s win marks the second time Saltz has taken home an ASME. In 2015 he won in the Columns and Commentary category, making him the first art critic to be given such an honor.
