“Jazzy Summer Nights,” the Baltimore outdoor concert series, which launched in 1999,
is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week with a concert featuring neosoul singer Bilal, Hip-Hop legend Biz Markie and DJ Keebeepooh.
Jazzy Summer Nights (JSN) was born out of a partnership between LaRian Finney and Jay McCutcheon and originated as “Jazz in the Alley” at Larry Stewart’s Place, which was a lounge on Calvert Street, downtown.
The concert series has had several homes over the years; Charles Plaza was the first location in 1999.
It moved to War Memorial Plaza that same year. Jazzy moved to Hopkins Plaza in 2004, was at the Horseshoe Casino for one year in 2015, Pier Six in 2016, returned to Hopkins Plaza in 2017 and is currently located at South Point in Port Covington.
The first JSN concert featured saxophonist Kim Waters, and the Kelly Bell Band and has featured a myriad of outstanding acts over the years including: the legendary God father of Go-Go, Chuck Brown, incredible songstresses Maysa Leake, Ledisi, Leela James, Jaguar Wright and Lizz Wright, powerhouse bands, Fertile Ground (featuring Navasha Daya), The Panama Band and EU, among many other phenomenal talents.
