Think of Jane Fonda and some of the Oscar-winning actress’s best films may come to mind, such as Coming Home (and her trailblazing aerobics in the 1980s—and stretch!). Now, she is in the art world spotlight, teaming up with Gagosian gallery and Christie’s for a two-part charity benefit in aid of the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California (a coalition of environmental activists and health professionals demanding more regulations in oil and gas drilling).
Works by artists such as Catherine Opie and Kenny Scharf will be auctioned as part of Christie’s post-war and contemporary art day sale in May and sold in a Gagosian show in Beverly Hills later this summer. The campaigners have a 2021-22 bill in their sights that was passed by the state governor Gavin Newsom to prevent oil companies from drilling in Californian neighbourhoods but could be repealed. “It’s an honour to partner with [Fonda] on this crucial issue impacting my home state,” says the eco-warrior Larry Gagosian.
