ICA Los Angeles Adds Three Board Members, Including Artist Andrea Fraser -ARTnews

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles has added Andrea Fraser, Berry Stein, and Joel Lubin to its board of directors.

Fraser is an artist, writer, and professor and art-department chair at the University of California, Los Angeles. She’s best known for her work in institutional critique, which looks at the systems and structures of the art world. Her most recent project is 2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics, a phone-book length tome that compiles data on political donations in the 2016 presidential election by the trustees of numerous museum boards across the United States. (Diagrams from the book also appeared as a wall installation in the current edition of SITElines at SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico.) She joins Charles Gaines as an artist-member of the museum’s board.

Stein is an artist and teacher and currently works for the L.A.-based nonprofit Inner-City Arts, which brings together professional artists with K–12 students from across the city to learn art-making practices in state-of-the-art studio spaces. Stein recently moved to the city from New York, where she had previously partnered with the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art on educational programming. She also founded a visual literacy program in 2016 called Exploring Visual Culture at a private school in New York’s East Village, aimed at connecting the school’s students with art and architecture at various cultural institutions across the city.

Lubin is the co-head of the Motion Picture Talent Department at Creative Artists Agency, where he works with actors like Josh Brolin, Tom Cruise, and David Oyelowo, among others. He previously worked at the William Morris Agency and at the production company Kingsgate Films.

“This is a great milestone for the ICA L.A. as we celebrate our inaugural year in downtown,” the museum’s board president, Laura Donnelley, said in a statement, referring to the institution’s recent rebranding from the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2016 and subsequent reopening in a new space last year.
