ArtAsiaPacific reports that Hwayeon Nam, Siren Eun Young Jung, and Jane Jin Kaisen have been selected to represent Korea at the 2019 Venice Biennale, which opens on May 11 of next year and runs through November 24. Hyunjin Kim, the Kadist foundation’s lead Asia curator and one of the curators of the 2008 Gwangju Biennale, will organize the pavilion.

According to the ArtAsiaPacific report, the pavilion will focus on “women and gender-diversified narratives that interrupt, break away from, and reconstruct previous understandings of modernization in the region of East Asia.” Archives will play an important role in the work on view, as will the region’s political history.

Nam’s work previously appeared at the Venice Biennale in the 2015 edition, as part of the Okwui Enwezor–curated group exhibition “All the World’s Futures.” Siren’s films, photographs, and research-based work has been included in shows at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Kaisen’s films have been exhibited at editions of the Berlin International Film Festival, the Liverpool Biennial, and the Gwangju Biennale.

Past artists to have represented Korea at the Venice Biennale include Cody Choi and Lee Wan (2017), Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho (2015), and Kimsooja (2013).
