The Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai and the fashion house Hugo Boss have selected the 2019 finalists for the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award for Emerging Asian Artists: Has Jingban, Hsu Che-Yu, Eisa Jocon, and Phan Thảo Nguyên.
The finalists were selected by a curatorial team helmed by Rockbund Art Museum director Larys Frogier that also included artist Cao Fei; Patrick D. Flores, the artistic director of the Singapore Biennale; Gridthiya Gaweewong, the artistic director of the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok; Sunjung Kim, the president of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation in South Korea; and Carol Yinghua Lu, the director of the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum.
An exhibition featuring all four finalists will open at the Rockbund Art Museum on October 18. The winner of the award, which will be announced in November, will take home 300,000 RMB (about $44,600).
In a statement, Frogier said, “The finalist artists brilliantly contribute to the qualitative diversity of contemporary art practices in Asia, revisiting the formats of performance and choreography to question social codes and gender identities, embracing video, painting and installation to remake historical and current narratives.”
