In New York, Hollis Taggart gallery has opened its third location in Chelsea, in a new complex of gallery spaces under the High Line known as the High Line Nine. Adjacent to the Zaha Hadid–designed building west of 10th Avenue between 27th and 28th Streets, the High Line Nine is currently occupied by spaces for Burning in Water Gallery, Kasmin, Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry, Valli Art Gallery, and ZieherSmith Gallery.
Hollis Taggart, which recently opened a new gallery on the first floor of 521 West 26th Street and a private viewing annex in the neighborhood, will occupy the new 500-square-foot space through early December, after which point it will evaluate future plans. Gallery founder and president Hollis Taggart told ARTnews that there will be a “learning curve of how the space will work,” alluding to his intentions to focus on contemporary exhibitions and solo shows in the space. He said that the High Line Nine presents an opportunity for the gallery to spotlight particular artists and stage “boutique shows.”
Exhibitions at Hollis Taggart’s High Line Nine space will rotate approximately every two weeks. An inaugural show titled “Five at Nine,” on view through October 3, features work by Pablo Atchugarry, Alex Kanevsky, Chloë Lamb, Li Lihong, and Bill Scott.
In a statement, Taggart said, “There’s been a lot of discussion recently about the future of galleries, both generally and as it relates to investment in Chelsea. For me, this feels like fertile ground for experimentation and also a moment to take some risk. The new location at the High Line gives us more opportunity and flexibility to grow in this area.”
