The Independent art fair, an annual event held in New York and Brussels, has announced the more than 50 international galleries and nonprofit organizations that will participate in its 2019 iteration in Manhattan. The event will take place at Spring Studios in Tribeca during Armory Week from March 8 to 10, with a preview on March 7.
Every year, Independent New York rotates more than 30 percent of its galleries “to encourage fresh perspectives and introduce unfamiliar artists to new audiences,” as a news release puts it. The upcoming edition, which marks the tenth anniversary of the fair, will feature 21 new exhibitors, including Ortuzar Projects (of New York), Arcadia Missa (London), Kai Matsumiya (New York), Take Ninagawa (Tokyo), Parker Gallery (Los Angeles), Monique Meloche Gallery (Chicago), and others.
Elizabeth Dee, cofounder of Independent, said in a statement, “Independent was founded to focus on the future. We are proud to be known as a place to see an artist or an idea for the first time, that might later take hold in a big way.”
