The Made in L.A. biennial at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles has proven to be a font of emerging Californian talents. The 2018 edition helped launch Luchita Hurtado, EJ Hill, and Lauren Halsey to notoriety, and the 2016 edition turned the art world on to Arthur Jafa, Martine Syms, and rafa esparza. Now, with the 2020 edition’s list revealed, the art world is getting its first glimpse at some of the L.A.-based artists they’re likely to be talking about for the next couple years.

Anticipation is running high for the next Made in L.A. biennial, thanks to an expanded program of 30 artists to show in an exhibition titled “a version” and curated by Myriam Ben Salah and Lauren Mackler. This year, works in the biennial will be seen not just at the Hammer but also at the Huntington, a museum, library, and sculpture garden in San Marino. The hope of launching the partnership, the Huntington’s director told ARTnews in September, is to highlight “the incredible cultural ecosystem of Los Angeles.”

Among those included in the next biennial are Kahlil Joseph, whose work appeared at the 2019 Venice Biennale, and Nicola L., a celebrated Pop sculptor who died last year. Also showing at the exhibition are artists such as Aria Dean, Niloufar Emamifar, Ligia Lewis, Jill Mulleady, and Ser Serpas.
