The legendary “Empress of Soul,” Gladys Knight, has officially signed on to sing the national anthem during the 2019 Super Bowl in her hometown of Atlanta.
Knight shared her excitement in a statement from the NFL, saying, “I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta. The NFL recently announced their new social justice platform Inspire Change, and I am honored to be a part of its inaugural year.”
The NFL has had trouble booking performers for the year’s biggest game due to its treatment of former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick. Several A-list artists turned down working with the league, including Rihanna, Cardi B and JAY-Z. “Sicko Mode” spitter Travis Scott, however, has agreed to join “This Love” collective Maroon 5 onstage for the halftime performance.
According to Variety, Scott spoke to Kaepernick before he confirmed his appearance at this year’s Super Bowl, but Kaepernick has hinted that the two do not agree about Scott performing.
