The Getty Museum in Los Angeles has appointed James A. Ganz as its senior curator of photographs. Ganz, who been the curator of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco for the past ten years, will oversee the 150,000 photographs in the museum’s collection and assist in directing the Center for Photographs at the Getty Center starting this July.
Prior to working at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Ganz, who is a specialist in 19th-century American and European photographers, was a curator at the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute in Massachusetts and an instructor at the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art. His past curatorial projects have included “Portals of the Past: The Photographs of Willard Worden” (2015), “Édouard Baldus: Landscape and Leisure in Early French Photography” (2003), and “Arctic Diary: Paintings and Photographs by William Bradford” (2002).
“I have long admired the Getty’s commitment to photography, from the depth and breadth of its collections to its spacious galleries and ambitious exhibition and publication programs,” Ganz said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues on developing and interpreting the museum’s photographic holdings for its diverse audiences, and exploring innovative ways to embrace the public’s special fascination with this dynamic art form.”
