New York’s Galerie Lelong & Co. has added artist Barthélémy Toguo to its roster. The French-Cameroonian artist’s first show with the gallery, set to open on March 15, will be his first New York solo exhibition in a decade.
Toguo, who is based in Paris and Bandjoun, Camerooon, is well known outside North America. In 2016, Toguo was shortlisted for the Prix Marcel Duchamp, France’s most high-profile art award, and his work has also appeared in editions of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the Venice Biennale, and the Dak’Art Biennale. His most recent solo exhibition was with the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York, last year.
The artist is known mainly for his paintings, through he also works in photography, sculpture, performance, and video. Toguo’s output is largely concerned with social and ecological tensions, and his Lelong show will take on modern issues related specifically to American culture today, such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the refugee crisis.
In a release, Toguo said, “What guides me is a constantly evolving aesthetic but also a sense of ethics, which makes a difference, and structures my entire approach.”
