Han-I Wang has been named a senior director of Gagosian and will be based in Hong Kong, where she will spearhead development of the gallery in Asia.
Wang comes to the powerhouse gallery from Christie’s in Hong Kong, where she held the titles of vice president and specialist in its contemporary art department. Before that, she was at Christie’s in New York, in the department of postwar and contemporary art.
Working at an auction house, “you don’t really get to have a deep relationship with the collections or the collectors,” she said in an interview with ARTnews, explaining that she looking forward to developing those kind of collaborations in her new position. “Gagosian has a very broad programming, they not only work with blue-chip artists, but they have a very good relationships with spaces.”
The new hire by Gagosian, which has 16 locations worldwide, comes less than a month after Pace Gallery named Whitney Ferrare, who had worked in sales at Gagosian Hong Kong, as its senior director in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. Like Wang, Ferrare had also spent time at Christie’s in Hong Kong, focusing on 20th-century art and contemporary Asian art.
Wang will be charged with handling the gallery’s exhibition programming and participation in art fairs, working with Nick Simunovic, managing director of Gagosian Hong Kong, who said in a release, “I have been hugely impressed by her drive, energy, and enthusiasm, as well as her strong reputation with collectors and the broader art community in Asia.”
“I felt the stars aligned,” Wang said, “but I could not have gotten here if it weren’t for Christie’s.”
