Last month, Gagosian gallery, the world’s biggest gallery with 16 locations worldwide, made headlines by hiring Andrew Fabricant, who had recently left his role as director at Richard Gray Gallery. Bloomberg reported that move, which has Fabricant working out of Gagosian’s New York headquarters. Today the gallery confirmed that it has made another big hire: art collector and neurosurgeon Frank Moore.
Moore is one of several people to join the gallery of late. In addition to Fabricant, who is returning to the gallery, having previously been director there from during the 1980s and ’90s, Gagosian last month hired former Christie’s specialist and vice president in contemporary art Han-I Wang as senior director in Hong Kong to work alongside longtime director Nick Simunovic on development throughout Asia. Late last year, it was reported that Gagosian was bringing onboard Simon Stock, who had been senior director for Impressionist and Modern art at Sotheby’s in London; Stock started work recently. All of the new employees have been hired as directors and are selling art on the gallery’s behalf.
A longtime collector, the Upper East Side–based Moore is known to have acquired works by Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, and Wade Guyton. When he and his wife, Nina (who has since passed away), appeared on the 2015 edition of ARTnews’s “Top 200 Collectors” list, they were listed as collecting “art of the past 20 years.” He is also a collector of design, including that of Jean Prouvé, whose works Gagosian has shown in Paris and in New York.
Moore is not the only individual recently to make the transition into a high-profile art market job from outside the historically cloistered art industry. Last year, Sotheby’s hired David Schrader, an art director and managing director at J.P. Morgan, to be head of private sales for contemporary art in New York.
