More than two thousand music lovers from the Baltimore and Washington Metropolitan Areas will fill Gilliam Concert Hall at Morgan State University’s Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center on Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. for the 10th annual fall concert of the Community Concert Choir of Baltimore, Inc. (CCCB).
This year’s concert will highlight also the centennial year of the Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. with the proceeds supporting programs for Baltimore students.
“I’m thrilled Delta Lambda joins forces with CCCB to promote the rich music of the African-American Church tradition and to raise funds for students in the Baltimore community.” said Dr. Marco K. Merrick, founding director of the CCCB. “The collaboration between Delta Lambda and CCCB is a natural extension of two Baltimore institutions proud of our past, rooted in our present and committed to using our gifts to support others today, tomorrow and for years to come.”
The concert entitled “Celebration” includes selections from classical composers of anthems, Negro spirituals, hymns and traditional gospel songs. W. Patrick Alston, one of Baltimore’s noted classically trained church organists and Marcus D. Smith pianist and music educator at Baltimore City College High School will accompany the ecumenical choral aggregation. Also, the Singing Sensations Children’s Choir and world renown soprano Janice Chandler will be featured during the program.
Family of the late Dr. Carl J. Murphy will be honored during the program. “It’s an honor that this concert will take place in a facility named for one of Delta Lambda’s founders, Dr. Carl J. Murphy,” notes Dr. Anton C. Bizzell, Delta Lambda’s current president. “His impact lives on in the lives of so many Baltimoreans today, and we all continue his work to create a more equal and just world.”
