espnW and The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism will host a one-day conference “Women Sports and Media: Coverage, Careers and Consequences” on Friday, April 20, to discuss the state of women in sports journalism.
The conference will begin at 8 a.m. ET at John S. and James L. Knight Hall on the University of Maryland campus and will include panel discussions with sports media professionals and research presentations by some of the world’s leading scholars in the area of women, sports and media. “At espnW, we’ve been committed to driving the conversation around women in sports and sports journalism,” said Laura Gentile, senior vice president, ESPN Business Operations & Content Strategy and espnW. “Our collaboration with The Shirley Povich Center is a key effort in continuing to make progress for female journalists, athletes and executives within the sports world.”
Scheduled panels include: a discussion about women in sports journalism, moderated by “ESPN The Magazine” Editor-in-Chief Alison Overholt; a discussion about the history of news coverage of women athletes moderated by ESPN’s “The Undefeated” managing editor Raina Kelley; and a screening and discussion of the espnW Nine for IX film “Let Them Wear Towels,” featuring journalists from the movie, moderated by television commentator and entrepreneur Bonnie Bernstein.
Meanwhile, scholars will present their research on double standards for women sportscasters, how women athletes are represented in the media and the career trajectories and changes in the sports business for women.
Merrill College Professor Linda Steiner said research shows the professional outlook for women in journalism has improved at large, but it’s worth examining whether that’s the case in sports contexts.
Said Steiner: “We need to take a serious, systematic rigorous look — in other words, do research — to examine the state of women in sports journalism, both as the reporter and the athlete.”
ESPN Coordinating Editor Claire Smith, recently inducted into the writer’s wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and Purdue University Associate Professor Cheryl Cooky are the conference’s keynote speakers. ESPN Senior Vice President Laura Gentile, Merrill College Dean Lucy A. Dalglish, Povich Center Director George Solomon and author Lynn Povich will also make remarks. ESPN anchor Elle Duncan will host throughout the day.
Solomon added: “The importance of this conference cannot be underestimated in these crucial times for all media. We’re proud to work with espnW in providing a forum that discusses so many vital issues impacting journalists, with an audience that includes students and veteran professionals.”
