WBO Junior Lightweight titlist, Masayuki Ito and Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring, 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team captain and U.S Marine Corps veteran, will headline a special Memorial Day edition of Top Rank on ESPN, which starts with undercards on ESPN+ at 6:30 p.m. ET before switching to ESPN and ESPN Deportes at 10 p.m. ET, on Saturday, May 25.
Herring, a former U.S. Marine who served for nine years, including two tours of duty in Iraq, sat down with ESPN’s boxing analyst/writer Mark Kriegel, who spent two days with Herring at the U. S. Olympic Boxing Training Center in Colorado Springs, Col.
But the fight isn’t special for Herring just because it’s Memorial Day weekend. Saturday would have been his daughter Ariyanah’s 10th birthday, but she passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Herring is dedicating this fight to her.
Titled “In memoriam: Why Marine Jamel Herring keeps fighting,” the feature can be found on ESPN.com, along with video of the interview which will also air on SportsCenter tonight (6 p.m. ET), on the Friday (11 p.m. ET) and Saturday (11:30 a.m. ET.) editions.
About the interview, Kriegel said, “Memorial Day is a holiday to honor the fallen. But talking to Jamel makes you consider the men and women who survived, many of them with wounds unseen.
“Jamel is an authentically sweet guy, almost always smiling. I see him regularly on the boxing circuit. I know his stablemates – starting with the great Terence Crawford – and his trainers – starting with Brian McIntyre. I thought I knew the beats of his story. But I had no idea he had PTSD. I didn’t know he’d gone through a period of drinking and acting out. I didn’t know, to this day, he sits with his back to the wall, checking the doors to see who’s coming in, and how to get out.”
